Cheap Thrills

Internet, we all know that Chicago is the greatest city in the world. We have excellent opportunities for FREE fun every day, and we are grateful for it. As you spend this week, going to venue to venue, loving every second of all the wonderful amenities our city offers, please take note of how much money you haven’t spent. Please, consider donating that money to relief efforts in Haiti. Chicago is, after all, the City of Big Shoulders, and our neighbor to the south could really use a shoulder right now.

Sunday, January 17

In the mood for a little music, but not sure what, exactly, will groove you? Today you have a choice! Tickets are free, but required, and the performance begins at 3PM.

Classical not your bag? Then lucky for you that Chicago Public Radio is hosting their own tribute! The 2nd Annual Winter Block Party for Chicago’s Hip-Hop Artists takes place at the Victory Gardens Biograph Theatre.  The full-day event includes a film screening, live performances, and open mics from 11 am – 6 pm.  The Victory Gardens Biograph Theatre is located at 2433 N. The Museum of Contemporary Art is free on Tuesday and the event begins at 6PM.

December 21, 2009

Cheap Thrills

Have you totally blown the Christmas budget? Spent just a wee teensy more than planned? You may be eating beans and rice for a while (I know I am!), but that doesn’t mean you should go without fun. As always, our great City has all kinds of free fun this week and you are invited!

Monday, December 21

In need of a holiday stroll? One that nurtures both the adult and the kid in you? Then the Lincoln Park Conservatory’s annual Winter Flower and Train Show will satisfy that need… and leave you oooing, ahhhhing and squeeing at all the lovely pink, white and red poinsettias and the oh-so-cool model trains and miniature village. The Conservatory is open from 9AM to 5PM.

Tuesday, December 2

Put a little light in your life tonight! The Lincoln Park Zoo’s annual Zoolights features the zoo illuminated by about two million colored lights. Truly a sight to see, the zoo also has ice carvings on display and some of the best hot cocoa in the city. The zoo is open until 9PM.

Wednesday, December 23

Take a step out of the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and enjoy a midday break at the Chicago Cultural Center. The International Music Foundation’s popular weekly lunchtime concerts feature young musicians performing masterpieces, and this week will feature May Phang playing works by Schumann, Mendelssohn, Messiaen and Liszt on the piano. The concert begins at 12:15PM.

Thursday, December 24

Get a bit of the tasty and squeal at the charming while you can: The Christkindlmarket at Daley Plaza closes at 4PM on Christmas Eve. Browsing through the delightful gifts and ornaments, while taxing on the budget self-control, is always free.

Friday, December 25

Got some free time today? Then take a stroll downtown to Macy’s on State Street, where you can still see the window decorations in all their glory. This year, letters to Santa (from good boys and girls, of course!) are proudly displayed.

Saturday, December 26

Walk off that holiday feast with a guided tour of downtown Chicago. Register at the Chicago Cultural Center’s Visitor Information Center between 10AM to 4PM for a walkabout with an Instagreeter expert in all things history and architecture. The last visit of the day leaves at 3PM.

December 16, 2009

Cheap Thrills

As the temperature drops, the festivities soar! This week, we have concerts and flowers and trains and all kinds of curiosities! You can put on your thinking cap and debate with the best, or take off your big kid shoes and marvel at some trains… it’s up to you, and it’s all free!

Wednesday, December 16

Amazon’s review reads: “Dry, offbeat, and mostly profane… How to Be Inappropriate adds up to the portrait of an artist who bumbles through life obsessed with one thing: extreme impropriety.” Intriguing? Then head over to Hopleaf for Booksluts, where author Daniel Nester will be doing a reading.

Thursday, December 17

Are Church and State truly separate in the US? Share your thoughts at the Freedom Museum’s new program, Smart Mouth. Each month, a panel of local “movers and shakers” will discuss a timely issue. The next rousing discussion will begin at 12:15PM at the Chicago Cultural Center.

Friday, December 18

Head to Daley Plaza for another dose of holiday cheer and delights for your ear. From 12PM to 1PM, the Providence St. Mel School Choir will be performing holiday favorites in the Daley Plaza lobby as part of the Plaza’s holiday festivities.

Saturday, December 19

The winter solstice is upon us, and that is one great reason to visit the North Park Villiage Nature Center. Celebrate the longest night of the year with an evening hike along trails lit by luminaries, animals from Big Run Wolf Ranch and… wait for it…. chestnuts roasted on an open fire. The park will be open from 6PM to 9PM for the event.

Cheap Thrills: December 8-12

December 8, 2009

Cheap Thrills

Hanukkah begins on Friday night, so you know what that means: We are smack dab in the middle of the holiday season! Don’t stress, though, because our great city has us covered. From fantastic art exhibitions, to a free meditation workshop, to music and local shopping, this week is all kinds of holiday fun without the holiday stress!

Tuesday, December 8

Ever wonder what to do with those used tea bags? Georgina Valverde has a few ideas… 1,600 of them, to be exact. In her exhibition, “Moral Geometry,” she created beauty, form and meaning out of waste, repetition and consumption. The exhibition is at the antena gallery in Pilsen. Hours are by appointment only.

Wednesday, December 9

Feeling the midweek slump? Get your groove back at the lunchtime meditation workshop at the Allyu spa in Old Town. They’ll help you get back in sync, regardless of your experience – or lack thereof – for free at their monthly workshop. Meditation runs from 12PM to 1PM.

Thursday, December 10

Hanukkah starts Friday night, so get ready with a tune and a smile! The Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School Choir will be performing at City Hall as part of the City Hall Holiday Concert Series “Deck the Halls.” The performance will be from 12PM to 1PM.

Friday, December 11

Head back to Navy Pier for a little wide-eyed wonder. The annual Winter Wonderfest is back, and better than ever! Festival Hall has been transformed into a holiday card with trees, lights, and more than 750,000 ornaments. Admission is free, but skating and rides are not. Wristbands can be purchased for those – $16 for rides, $19 with ice skate rental.

Saturday, December 12

‘Tis the season for giving, which, of course, requires a heck of a lot of shopping. It can be exhausting traveling high and low for that perfect present… but not at Bice Grill! Get your nosh on while jamming to local area musicians and perusing designs by Chicago designers at Rock-n-Shop. The shopping can be had from 12PM to 8PM, just in time for a late dinner.
