Capitol Ideas…

Looking for something to do?  Why not check out our state capital, Springfield?  There’s always something happening at the ‘patch’, and below are just a few of the events coming up before Christmas.

Take a walk. St. John’s Hospital and Downtown Springfield, Inc. present the annual Old Capitol Holiday Walk, December 16 and 23rd from 5 to 8 p.m.  Rediscover downtown Springfield with its unique shops and dining, creative window displays, free entertainment, horse-drawn trolley rides, and festive lights.  And the kiddies will love visiting the Santa House.  The Old State Capitol and Lincoln-Herndon Law Office will also be open and will host special entertainment including the Old State Capitol Chorale (December 16) and Cambric Garden (December 16 and 23).  There will also be strolling entertainment throughout downtown.  Parking is easy with the underground garage beneath the Old State Capitol (until 9 p.m.) and the downtown meters are free on week nights after five p.m.  For more information, contact Downtown Springfield, Inc. at 217-544-1723 or visit www.downtownspringfield.org

Naughty or Nice? Can’t make it to Santa House during the Old Capitol Holiday Walk?  No problem.  Santa will be listening to every child’s wish list from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday until December 23rd when he has to return to the North Pole to begin his famous flight.  Santa House is located in front of Robins Roberts Stadium.  For directions or more information call 217-753-0700.

Christmas with the Prez. Just how did the Lincolns celebrate the holidays?  Find out by touring The Lincoln Home National Site, from now until January 7, 2010, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.   See where stockings were hung, what food was prepared, and a multitude of other items of interest.  Lincoln’s Home is located at 426 S. 7th Street and tickets are free!  Call 217-492-4241 or visit http://www.nps.gov/liho for more information.

Home for the Holidays.
