Cheap Thrills: October 4-10

Cheap Thrills

What do you know? Blink an eye and suddenly we are smack dab in the middle of Octoween! Or Pumpkin season. Or Apple-ooza. Call it what you will, eat what you want, and have a fantastic FREE time while you’re at it!

Sunday, October 4

How does a smidge of free cheesecake sound? Eli’s Cheesecake will be throwing quite the Cheesecake Festival, including games (cheesecake bingo!), cooking demonstrations, music and family-friendly fun. Pack a fork and be prepared to pack on a few pounds! The festivities will be from 11AM-5PM at 6701 W. Forest Preserve Drive.

Monday, October 5

Start the Halloween season with a little film noir: Cinematheque Sonotheque locates the most obscure, underground, hip and cool indie films, and then presents them to an enthusiastic audience for FREE.  The next installment is The Thief, a propaganda film from 1952. Doors open at 6PM at 1444 W. Chicago.

Tuesday, October 6

Got a doodle bug? The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) has  the cure! Beginning at 6PM, Scott and Tyson Reeder will host Doodleganza: The Drawing Extravaganza, a party-slash-art-class. The MCA will provide the materials, and participants will provide the expression for a hands-on good time.

Wednesday, October 7

Harken back to the good ole days of radio at the DCA (Department of Cultural Affairs) Theater. American Federation of Television and Radio Artists/Screen Actors Guild Senior Radio Players will perform two classic radio scripts, On a Country Road and Halloween, complete with voice actors and sound effects, and maybe, possibly even live music. The show begins at 7PM at the Claudia Cassidy Theater.

Thursday, October 8

Now that you know all about doodling, and um, sketching, visit Chicago’s vibrant West Side for the inaugural Sketch Thursdays. The Architrouve Gallery will have several local artists sketching and selling their work. Enjoy a cocktail, add to your art collection, browse masterpieces, and meet Chicago’s most creative citizens… all in one night! Sketch Thursdays will run from 6PM-9PM.

Friday, October 9

Get a little closer to your food source at the Altgeld Sawyer Corner Farm. This cooperative farm grows veggies as well as paper- and dye-making supplies right here in the great City of Chicago. For Chicago Artists Month, there will be tours of the farm and artists Shayna Cohen and Amy Mall will be giving demonstrations.

Saturday, October 10

Prepare to be amazed at the Carnival of Curiosities, billed as a traveling sideshow of “mindblowing feats and human wonders.” Friendly to little ones – and big ones who don’t dig scare tactics and gore – the Carnival will transform Navy Pier’s Pier Park into a boardwalk of spectacles from 2PM-10PM, with fireworks at 9PM.
